Information last updated The Finncon in Turku is over. For current information about new Finncons, please go to www.finncon.org. What is Finncon?Finncon is the largest SF convention in Finland. This year we expect approximately 4000 participants. The event has no participation fee. Finncon is held at the University of Turku. Turku is a beautiful city located at the southwestern coast of Finland. ProgrammeOn the evening of Friday, August 13 there is going to be a party with Star Wars theme (the Finnish premier of Episode I is on August 6). The party is held at Cosmic Comic Café, which combines a comic store and a pub. The event itself begins on Saturday, August 14 and ends on the following Sunday. We will hold the traditional masquerade party on Saturday evening. The programme consists of lectures, panel discussions and several more informal presentations. Items that may be of interest to our foreign participants include guest of honour speeches, Star Wars Fan Gathering and the numerous animes (Japanese animated films) presented during the convention. Roughly one third of our programme will be in English. Also considerable portion of typical Finncon participants are fluent in English. Guests of HonourFinncon has two international guests of honour. Connie Willis is the author of Doomsday Book and several other novels and short stories. She has also won numerous Hugo and Nebula prizes. Philip Pullman is the author of the acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy. The third part of the trilogy is due to be published in the autumn of this year. Our fan guest of honour is Ahrvid Engholm from Sweden. AccommodationThe official Con Hotel is Sokos Hotel City Börs. It is conveniently located at the centre of the city, within walking distance from the convention and from both bus and railway stations. There are also excellent bus connections to the hotel from the airport and from the harbour. You should reserve your room as soon as possible, for hotel rooms may be on short supply in August. The hotel has a special offer for Finncon participants, and therefore you should mention your participation when you make the reservation. The hotel can be reached by calling +358-2-337 3800 or sending email to sales.turku@sok.fi. There are also other, more inexpensive accommodation alternatives.
